“How Long, Oh Lord!”

David Sulcer

Passage: Revelation 6:9-17

Prayer: Father, down through the centuries, in which humanity has occupied this planet, your people have cried out, “How long?” How long before truth wins and justice prevails? How long before all the long march of suffering and sin is over and better days arrive? Especially now, since a Savior has died on the Cross and rose again, we long for the conclusion of this matter with our fallen world. Others who totally deny your power and reality use this sustained and ongoing suffering and injustice to impugn your character, deny your existence, and rail against you with derision. They say, “Where is your supposed God?” But we, believing in not only your existence, but also your goodness and power, add to “How long?” the word “Lord”; because we know that your lordship is the answer! We know that one day, sin, sickness, injustice, and evil will be fully vanquished. We know that our heart-aching desire to see the world brought back into balance at last and our own harsh verdict of injustice resolved will soon take place.  But still, we wait and we pray with patience. Yes, the day is coming but sometimes it just can’t arrive quickly enough! Evil must still grow to its ripe appointment with justice, and for some reason, it has yet to come to completion. But we, your servants, will not give up, for we have seen the vision of John the Revelator! We know how the story ends even if it takes longer than we like. So we wait, dear Father and we pray. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.

Ponder: Always remember that crying out “How long?” to God is not a problem when you add “Lord” to the cry! It allows our frustration to meet with hope.
